Edo glass is handmade using techniques developed in the current Tokyo area. Its origins date back to the early 18th century in what is now Nihonbashi and Asakusa in Tokyo, where it is said to have started with the production of everyday items such as mirrors and wind chimes. During the Meiji period, European techniques were adopted and manufacturing methods were modernized. Because it is made by hand by artisans, Edo glass has a unique texture not found in industrial products.
