Metal-casting began in Kawana City, Mie Prefecture, during the Tokugawa era and was initially used to produce guns under the guidance of the feudal lord as well as items such as lanterns, farm tools, and pots. Times changed, however, and today traditional techniques are being used to produce items such as fences, street lights, and manhole covers.
