Makabe Ishidoro are stone lanterns produced around the town of Makabe in Ibaraki Prefecture. Production of this traditional craftwork started during the Kamakura period (1185-1333). Makabe was one of the three major stone production areas in Japan, and its stone industry was already thriving at that time. High-quality granite quarried from Mt. Kaba and other local sites gives Makaba lanterns the pure white color that is one of their distinguishing features. These beautiful stone lanterns are often found in Japanese gardens and at temples, and they are known for their traditional designs and exceptional craftsmanship.
