Marin Rozu (rose) crafts are made from carefully polished pieces of rhodonite, a manganese silicate mineral extracted from Noda Tamagawa Mine, located north of the Kitakami mountain range in Iwate Prefecture. Rhodonite comes in colors ranging from black (high in manganese and iron) to rose and light pink (high in quartz). Jewelry and other products made from marin rozu are valued for their beauty and also because they are believed to bring good luck, since precious ore is often found wherever rhodonite exists.
