The term “arare” (霰) refers to small, granular protrusions that decorate the surface of cast iron tea kettles or other products. Using traditional techniques, Oni-Arare Gama craftsmen create the protrusions by pressing individual grains into a finished mold using a spatula with a rounded tip. There are various types of arare, including “ko-arare” (small grains), “o-arare” (large grains), and “oni-arare” (ogre or demon arare 鬼霰). Arare can be applied to the entire surface of the kettle or to only part of it, creating a unique appearance and tactile quality.
