信州打刃物
Shinshu Uchihamono
長い伝統により生み出された扱いやすさと、薄い刃による切れ味の鋭さ、硬さと柔軟さの絶妙なバランスなどが特徴です。
鎌が現在のような形状になったのは、江戸時代後期の2人の鍛冶職人によって改良された頃です。鎌の柄に差し込む部分を反らせる「芝付け」や、刃の面を内側に向けて曲げられている「つり」は、信州鎌に見られる独特な特徴です。信州打刃物は、鎌の生産に特化しています。伝統的に薄くて丈夫な刃を生産する技術があります。信州北部に松林が多く、松炭が容易に手に入ったことが関係しています。刃の幅が広いことも特徴で、丈夫で刃こぼれしにくく、砥石で研ぐことによって長く使用することができます。また、林業に使用される鉈（なた）や斧なども多く生産されています。軽くて扱いやすい特徴が、作業をはかどらせることに大きく貢献してきました。重厚な美しさと、高い耐久性をあわせ持った製品です。
Shinshu Uchihamono are metalworks produced around Nagano in Nagano Prefecture. (This area was formerly known as Shimano Province or Shinshu.) Shinshu sickles, which originated in the late Edo period (1603-1868), embody the Shinshu Uchihamono technique and are perhaps its most famous product. Shinshu sickles are larger and wider than the sickles made in other regions but are surprisingly lightweight thanks to their extremely thin steel single-edged blade (hagane). The angle of the blade is also unique; it is designed so that cut grass falls conveniently into the user’s hand.
