The Shonan region of Japan, near Yokohama in Kanagawa Prefecture, is known for its production of cloisonne enamelware, known as Shonan Shippo Yaki. One of the distinctive features of Shonan Shippo is the use of silver foil. Unlike shippo from other parts of Japan, where colored glazes are applied directly onto the metal base, Shonan Shippo artisans apply draw patterns on silver foil before applying layered color glazes. Designs are often inspired by nature, such as flowers, birds, and landscapes.
