Teshima Ishidourou are handcrafted stone lanterns produced in the area of Tonosho-cho, Shozu-gun (Kagawa Prefecture), using stone quarried from Mt. Danyama on Teshima Island. The source material is a breccia tuff that is soft and easy to work with using chisels and hammers. Teshima stone has been mined since the Kamakura period and used throughout the country as raw stone for lanterns. Particularly famous are the stone lanterns found at Katsura Imperial Villa and Nijo Castle in Kyoto, and at Sumiyoshi Shrine in Osaka. Teshima Ishidourou is a traditional craft of Kagawa Prefecture.
