Tokyo Shippo, or cloisonne enamelware, is a craft in which cells (cloisons) are created on a metal surface, often with fine wires, then filled with colorful glazes that are fired at a high temperature to create colorful glass-like patterns. (The name “shippo” refers to the seven jewels of Buddhism, as cloisonné inlays were believed to resemble the precious stones mentioned in Buddhist scriptures.) Tokyo Shippo craftsmen use multiple layers of glaze for each color, then repeatedly polish the surface to create intricate patterns. Tokyo Shippo products include tiepins, cuff links, pierced earrings, pendants, and necklaces.
