Tsugaru Biidoro

Tsugaru Biidoro is a glass craft that grew out of methods used to make fishing floats. Artisans use sand from Shichirinagahama Beach on the west side of the Tsugaru Peninsula to make a wide variety of colored glass products. Among the nine different techniques they use is a process known as "air blowing" that has been passed down since the 1st century BC. After melting and molding glass at high temperature in a crucible, the artisan winds it around the end of a blowing pole, then skillfully blows through the other end to inflate the glass. The piece is then reheated in the molding furnace so that layers of colored glass can be applied. As a result, Tsugaru Biidoro products have diverse shapes and rich colors, and each piece is unique.
