Uchidashi (which means “hammering down” in Japanese) is a traditional metalworking craft in which artisans transform thin sheets of copper or other metal into three-dimensional forms through controlled hammering and shaping. To create designs, the metal is repeatedly hammered either from the front (a technique known as embossing) or the back (repoussage) using specialized punches. This process allows artisans to create intricate raised patterns and forms in the metal.
