Its sophisticated designs, skills, and techniques are used to produce particularly high-quality items, such as tea ceremony utensils, tableware, and furniture. Of all lacquerware production areas in Japan, Kyoto lacquerware is made using particularly thin wood bases, with meticulous undercoating and refined, elegant maki-e lacquering. Because it is created based on the value of being an art and craft, rather than producing items for everyday use, it has inner qualities of "wabi" and "sabi" that are typically not seen in other production areas.
