Daigo Town, Ibaraki Prefecture, produces more lacquerware than any other area of Japan except for Jobouji in Iwate Prefecture. Daigo lacquer has an overwhelmingly high transparency and a beautiful, high-quality luster that is its greatest appeal. It is considered to be of high quality among lacquerers and is highly valued for its use in Wajima lacquer and Shunkei lacquers.

"Yamizo-nuri," which uses an abundance of Daigo lacquer, was developed to make this area a center of lacquerware production. Designated as a traditional craft of Ibaraki Prefecture, Yamizo-nuri lacquerware is unique because of its simple, uneven finish. This enables people to use it casually and often, even on a daily basis, rather than treat it as a luxury item.
