Tosa Kodai Nuri

Kosa-nuri, a lacquerware unique to Kochi Prefecture that has been passed down since the early Meiji period, is characterized by a pattern raised with rust on a shark-skin-like surface called rough ground. This creates durable products that are less challenging to maintain than other lacquerware. Although it is relatively inexpensive and easy to use on a daily basis, Tosa Kosa-nuri uses an extremely meticulous the production process.. From the start of painting to completion, there are a total of 32 steps, and completing them typically takes more than 30 days. Starting with hardening the material, most of the processes involve repeated painting and drying, which requires considerable patience. The end result is a type of lacquerware that is not found in other prefectures.
