Yamanaka Shikki

Yamanaka lacquerware originated during the Tensho era (1573-1592) of the Azuchi-Momoyama period. It is said to have begun when a woodcarver with a license to cut down trees in various provinces moved from the mountainous region of Echizen (northeastern Fukui Prefecture) to the Manago area, 20km upstream from Yamanaka Onsen in Ishikawa Prefecture, and brought the technique of using a potter's wheel with him. After that, between 1600 and 1800, master craftsmen were invited from all over the country, and Yamanaka lacquerware developed through the introduction of these varied techniques.
