Kuwana trays are a traditional Kuwana lacquer craft that has been around since the Edo period. Matsudaira Sadanobu, father of Matsudaira Sadanaga, lord of Kuwana, had a picture of a turnip painted on a Kuwana tray and presented it to the shogunate. From that time on, Kuwana trays came to be called "turnip trays." They are bordered with vermilion Kijiro lacquer and feature a variety of patterns, including flowers. Another distinctive feature is that the edges of the trays are finished with a unique blue lacquer finish called Ijiiji lacquer. They are made from natural wood that is over 300 years old, with multiple coats of lacquer applied, and the pictures are all hand-painted.
