Sakurai lacquerware is made in the Iyo region of Ehime Prefecture, and its origins are said to date back approximately 250 years. In the beginning, Sakurai lacquerware was made using the so-called Shunkei lacquerware technique, and many of the lacquerware products made were inexpensive and used by common people. In the Tenpo era, however, the corners of the stacked boxes were combined into a comb-tooth shape. This technique, called the Kushi-sashi method, was unique to Sakurai lacquerware and became famous throughout the country. Skilled craftsmen began coming from Wajima and Kishu to improve their lacquerware techniques, such as Chinkin and Maki-e, carrying on the tradition to the present day.
