Hidehira-nuri lacquerware is said to have originated in the late Heian period, when Fujiwara Hidehira, who ruled Hiraizumi in Oshu, invited craftsmen from Kyoto to create vessels using lavish amounts of local lacquer and gold. A representative pattern known as Yusoku Monyo combines Genji clouds and diamond shapes that are unique to the Heian period.
