Echizen Shikki

Lacquerware has been produced in the Kawada district of Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture, and its surrounding areas since the end of the Kofun period. The area is blessed with high-quality timber, and Sabae has had many lacquer-tapping artisans since ancient times. The distinctive features of this lacquerware are its elegant brilliance, the calm luster of the lacquer (which is achieved by applying multiple coats), and its lightness and durability. The beautiful, deep colors soothe the hearts of Japanese people, and this lacquerware is also often used on special occasions such as weddings and other celebrations.
