Kagawa lacquerware developed under the protection of the feudal lord during the Edo period, and the region has produced many master craftsmen and master artisans. Kagawa lacquerware, most of which is produced in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, includes a wide variety of products, such as confectionery dishes, trays, low tables, and decorative shelves. This lacquerware is widely loved for its decorations, which often depict scenes of everyday life, and for its layering of colored lacquer and carving. For example, a lacquer craftsperson may paint 30 layers of red lacquer, then 30 layers of green lacquer, then carve through the layers to each desired color layer, revealing a richly layered pattern. The five traditional techniques used in Kagawa – Kinma, Zosei, Choshitsu, Goto-nuri, Zoukoku-nuri – have been preserved by master craftsmen and artisans, and passed down to the present day. All five of these techniques are characterized by elegant patterns and luster.
