High-quality mica (unmo) has been produced in Mt. Yatsumen in Nishio City, Aichi Prefecture, since the Nara period. In the early Meiji era, a laborer excavating mica was buried alive in the mountain, and someone hung a bell on a tree branch to soothe his spirit. This led a local potter to create the "Kirara Bell." The bell, which has a fine texture and is studded with mica from Mikawa tile clay, produces a friendly and pleasant sound. The clay is mixed from the mountain soil, and the bell is hand-formed, then dried, bisque-fired, and painted. At one point, there was only one craftsman capable of making these bells, but now local women are working to preserve the craft through crowdfunding and public awareness activities.
