Neputa Chochin

The large, distinctive lanterns known as Nebuta or Neputa are perhaps best known from their use in a famous festival held in Aomori Prefecture, located at the northernmost tip of Japan's Honshu island. During the festival, which attracts millions of tourists every year, people parade through the town on floats carrying large lanterns featuring themes from Chinese and Japanese legends and battles. The Neputa lanterns are not only made for the festival but also donated to shrines and displayed on eaves to create a lively atmosphere.
