In approximately 1650, a cooperative called Rosokuza was established in Nanao City (located in the western part of the Hokuriku region and the central port city of the Noto region of Ishikawa Prefecture) to facilitate manufacturing and sales. Thanks to Nanao’s port, candles from Nanao City were soon being sold throughout Japan. Each candle is made by carefully hand-rolling the wick on top of a cylindrical piece of Japanese paper and tightening it with cotton. Because the wick is hollow all the way to the tip, wax and oxygen are constantly absorbed from the wick while it is burning, creating a strong flame that is not easily extinguished by wind. The large, flickering flame is mysterious, and its rate of fluctuation is said to be the same as that which regulates the autonomic nervous system and leads to mental stability.
