Sanshu Okazaki Warousoku

Traditional Sanshu Okazaki candles have been produced in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, since the mid-16th century, and the process has remained unchanged since the Edo period. Using a process known as "Nama-gake," the candle-maker forms a wick from rush grass and uses bare hands to repeatedly apply layers of wax squeezed from the nuts of the Japanese wax tree. After adding layer upon layer, the cross section of the candle looks like the internal rings of a tree. The flame, which does not produce smoke or soot, gently flickers as if breathing and brings peace of mind.
