Kyo-sensu were first made by layering and stitching together thin cypress boards called "hiogi.” Later, “kami-sen " made of bamboo and paper were made, and a variety of Kyo-sensu were created tailored for different purposes such as for the Imperial Court, Noh, Kyogen, dance, tea, incense, and other occasions. Kyo-uchiwa fans, on the other hand, follow the tradition of the Korean fan, have many bamboo ribs inside the base paper, and are characterized by a "sashi-e” structure in which the fan surface and handle are made separately. During the Edo period, fans decorated with elegant paintings by Imperial Court artists were made, and are thought to have become popular among the general public.
