Kyo-hyogu refers to traditional mounting techniques used in Kyoto to reinforce, preserve, and enhance the display of calligraphy and paintings. Examples include the well-known hanging scroll as well as framed items, sliding doors, and folding screens. Kyoto was blessed with an environment in which high-quality mounting materials could be procured. Moreover, the city prospered as the capital for many years, which resulted in high demand for mountings from the Imperial Court, tea ceremony schools, temples, and shrines.
