The carving techniques of Ise, Mie Prefecture, are thought to have been introduced by craftsmen who came from Shinshu at the beginning of the Meiji era. The necessary materials for wood carving were readily available in Shinjiyama (the shrine forest) and Osugidani, supporting the development of carvings that were highly valued as souvenirs by visitors to the shrine. Before the war, everyday items such as trays and tobacco cases were made and gained popularity. After the war, the focus shifted to toys such as kendama and yo-yos, characterized by vivid colors.
