Nagoya, along with Kyoto, is one of the two major production centers for folding fans. While Kyoto fans (*Kyō-sensu*) are primarily made for dance, tea　 ceremonies, decoration, and women’s use, Nagoya fans are crafted mainly for celebratory and ceremonial purposes, as well as practical use by men, with a preference for vibrant and distinct colors. It is believed that this tradition began in the mid-18th century when craftsmen from Kyoto relocated to Nagoya. Since then, these fans have also been actively exported overseas. The process is divided into different parts, and each step requires skilled techniques to make this traditional craft.
