Otsu-e is a type of folk painting made and sold in the Otani and Oiwake areas of Omi (Shiga Prefecture) since the early Edo period. Most of the early paintings featured Buddhist motifs, but by the first half of the 18th century, there were about 120 different subjects, and many paintings included humorous caricatures or elements of everyday life. In the late Edo period, otsu-e became popular as souvenirs and amulets for travelers traveling along the Tokaido, and the art form also became increasingly popular in the West. Siebold and Picasso reportedly owned otsu-e. Although the number of otsu-e artists has diminished, a few artists continue working to preserve this unique folk painting tradition, and its popularity endures. In 2019, an exhibition of otsu-e was held in Paris.
