Bottle craft temari is a traditional craft handed down in Aisho-cho, Aichi-gun, Shiga Prefecture. An embroidered temari ball is encased in a round glass bottle, much like the trick of building a ship model in a bottle. Because one can easily see the decorative ball inside, these “round and friendly” temari are often displayed in alcoves and entranceways as a lucky charm. There are various theories about the craft’s history, but one theory is that it was brought to Aisho-cho at the end of the Edo period. A preservation society was formed in 1960, making it possible to preserve and continue refining the craft to the present day.
