Fireworks are produced and enjoyed all over the world, but each country has its own unique characteristics. Japanese fireworks are known for their delicate and highly artistic nature. There are various theories about the origins of fireworks in Japan, but they are said to date back at least 400 years. In 1733, a year after many people died from a nationwide famine and epidemic, Shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune held a water god festival with fireworks on the day of the Ryogoku River Opening, to pray for the souls of the dead and for the elimination of epidemics. This fireworks festival ultimately led to the current Sumida River Fireworks Festival.
