The Natsukawa Uchiwa has been crafted in the Kibi region of Okayama Prefecture since the Edo period. Today, a few members of a preservation society carry on this tradition, working to preserve the techniques and train new successors. One of its distinctive features is the "Uta-tsugi" technique, where a haiku is written in a single stroke, cut out, and then joined together with glue. Another unique aspect is the "Sukashi" technique, where a colored design is placed between two layers of washi paper. The entire process is done by hand, and when held up to the light, the letters and images appear, creating a delicate and elegant effect.
