Nippa no Chochin

栃木県伝統工芸品に指定されている「新波の提灯」は、江戸時代後期に藤岡町新波にある圓照院潮音寺の住職から提灯づくりの技術が田中家へ伝授されたことによりはじまりで、昔からの伝統を守りながら、提灯の形状に合った江戸文字、その土地に伝わる絵模様などを描いているのが特徴です。

Nippa-no-chochin, designated as a traditional handicraft in Tochigi Prefecture, are popular as festival decorations, gifts, and souvenirs for visitors from abroad. They are unique in that they utilize the Edomoji lettering style along with illustrations rooted in local culture. Today there is still a fourth generation maker working in the area.
