Nihon Kacchu

When samurai and warriors fought - typically with spears, swords, and bows and arrows – they wore armor to protect their torso and head. The history of armor stretches back to ancient times, and the materials and style have changed over time as styles of fighting have changed. Armor like that shown in the accompanying photograph was primarily used from the Sengoku period onwards, when efforts were made to improve the durability and effectiveness of protective gear. When the Edo period began a time of peace, armor was no longer used in large-scale battles, and decorative elements were added to make it look more luxurious when displayed.
