The word “warosoku” simply means Japanese (wa) candle (rosoku). These famous red or vermilion candles are made through a multi-step process in which wax is extracted from the nuts of the wax tree through heating and melting, then wrapped around a wick made from Japanese paper and rush grass. Because these candles are made from pure vegetable wax, they produce very little oily smoke and do not stain the room easily. They are also hard to extinguish even when the wind blows, and the unique flickering flame has a mystical beauty.
