It is said that incense-making began in Imaichi (now Nikko City), and this craft has been passed down to the present day as a way to create high-quality products. Primary incense materials include natural fragrant woods as well as herbal medicines used in traditional Chinese medicine, such as buds, leaves, and roots. Among these, cedar incense has developed as an industry, taking advantage of the abundant local cedar. Cedar leaves are ground into powder, kneaded together, then dried for several days, which preserves the natural scent.
