Since the Edo period, when lanterns became more widespread and the division of labor advanced, many craftsmen gathered in what is now the Asakusa area of ​​Tokyo, establishing workshops that specialized in painting lanterns. The Edo tegaki chochin are characterized by their striking characters and designs called "Edo moji," which are individually painted by craftsmen. Today, many continue to be produced for use as interior decorations or souvenirs.
