Edo mounting originated in the early Edo period when the Tokugawa Shogunate was established in Edo, resulting in an influx of daimyo, temple and shrine mounters from Kyoto. Edo mounting is characterized by a chic and clean finish that is typical of a city with flourishing culture.

The mounting techniques and methods used in Edo are very similar to those in Kyoto, aside from some differences in the names of tools and work processes. Also, because the two cities have different climates, craftsmen use different thicknesses of glue. Some of the processes and tools such as brushes have changed somewhat over time, as Edo artisans like to create new shapes and to make tools that are easier to use.
