やや縦長の長方形の凧に何十色もの染料、顔料を使い、錦絵のような武者絵や歌舞伎絵などの凧絵が描かれます。文字だけの粋な字凧などもあります。

There are square kites all over Japan, but the length-to-width ratio and frame structure vary depending on the region. Edo square kites, traditional rectangular kites from Tokyo, are characterized by a long, bow-shaped piece of bamboo called an "unari" attached to the top of the kite and a long string called an "ito-me" attached to the bottom that is used for flying. Edo square kites are also known as "Edo Nishikie kites," and the slightly long rectangular kites are painted with dozens of dyes and pigments to depict warriors like Nishikie or kabuki pictures. Some stylish character kites are decorated only with letters.
