Yuzawa Tako

Yuzawa kites are a traditional craft of Yuzawa City, Akita Prefecture, with a history dating back to the mid-Edo period. Yuzawa kites are divided into three types: "managu," "musha-e," and "kabuki-e," with the "managu kite" being the most representative pattern of Yuzawa kites. They are characterized by large "managu” (eyes) painted in one color of ink and are said to have been invented by Edo period samurai Ao Heima. When Heima was asked to paint a picture praying for the elimination of chiggers, he painted the face of a demon woman – the origin of the managu kite. Other features include a simple frame structure with only one vertical rib and three horizontal ribs, and a simple way to attach the string, allowing for versatile maneuverability.
