Higashima district in Hōdatsu Shimizu Town, Ishikawa Prefecture, is a small community of about 80 people, but most of the men who live here are licensed firework makers, making it a village of firework makers. Fireworks have been used in autumn festivals in Higashima since ancient times, and in the past, young local men were responsible for making fireworks for use at festivals all over Noto. It is said that in the Meiji period, boys began participating in fireworks making when they turned 13, and techniques such as blowing fireworks from bamboo tubes have been passed down over time. The local Tehayahime Shrine played a central role in keeping the techniques alive, and they continue to be passed down to the present day by Noto Fireworks Co. Ltd.
