Yashu Tenmari

野州てんまりは、栃木県地方に伝わる伝統的な糸かがりまりがもとになっています。栃木県にゆかりのある素材や模様を使って作られるようになり、栃木が野州と言われていたことから「野州てんまり」と名付けられました。野州てんまりは野州の風土が育んだ素朴で美しい郷土玩具であり、草木染めの絹や木綿の糸を使い、ふるさとにゆかりのある花や野草、昔話に出てくる名木や古木などを、模様の題材としています。また、山や林から拾い集めた椎の実や栃の実を芯にして、苔やぜんまいの綿毛を土台に丹念に糸でかがり仕上げます。

Yashu Tenmari are simple and beautiful toys based on the traditional thread-stitched balls of the Tochigi region (also known as Yashu). Yashu Tenmari are made using plant-dyed silk and cotton threads, with patterns based on flowers and wild plants associated with the region as well as ancient trees that appear in old tales. Chestnuts and horse chestnuts collected from the mountains and forests are used as cores, and the toys are carefully stitched with thread around a base of moss and fern fluff.
