Kanayama lacquer candles are produced in Kanayama Town, Onuma County, Fukushima Prefecture. During the Edo period, the Aizu Clan encouraged the production of lacquer wax, and the industry developed to the point where it accounted for two-thirds of the Japanese candles consumed in Edo. The candles are made by extracting wax from lacquer fruit, applying wax repeatedly to a wick made of rush grass, and then shaping the candles with a plane, which gives them a nostalgic, rustic feel. Production ceased around 1945, but a revival society formed in 2001 is working to resume production of these rare lacquer candles.
