Goldfish lanterns, a folk craft representative of Yanai City in Yamaguchi Prefecture, are said to have originated approximately 150 years ago when a Yanai merchant made a goldfish-shaped lantern for children using dyes from traditional Yanai striped fabric. Made with a frame assembled from split bamboo and covered with Japanese paper and dyed with red and black dyes, these lanterns have been passed down by local people and are now a seasonal feature of summer, adding color to the white-walled streets of Yanai. They have also become popular in other prefectures, often appearing at aquariums or various festivals.
