Sesson Uchiwa

Sesson was a Zen monk who became famous for his unique and powerful style of painting during the Muromachi period. He is said to be the founder of Sesson Uchiwa fans, a craft with over 400 years of history. This fan is made using locally sourced Madake giant timber bamboo from Hitachiota City in Ibaraki Prefecture. The bamboo is split and woven with rush grass, then pasted with Nishinouchi washi paper, which is made solely from mulberry bark fibers harvested in the region. In addition to ink paintings of beautiful landscapes of nature associated with Sesson, such as horses, eggplants and landscapes of Mito, the fans are characterized by their square shape and excellent durability.
