Deer antler crafts are mainly produced in Nara Prefecture using the antlers of Japanese deer living on the grounds of Kasuga Taisha Shrine and Nara Park. The craft, which is said to have originated in the late 17th century, uses antlers cut at an annual deer antler-cutting ceremony. Antlers are processed with saws and files, then polished to a finish. Deer antler crafts are characterized by their robust yet delicate beauty, and their lustre deepens with use.
