Isshouchi Yaki

Isshouchi Yaki, a unique ceramic from Kuma Village in Kumamoto Prefecture, emerged in the early 1800s following a local kaolin discovery. This allowed for hanjiki-shitsu (semi-porcelain) production, combining pottery's earthy warmth with porcelain's durability. It features simple, unadorned, utilitarian forms, embodying a distinctive folk-craft (mingei) appeal primarily for local circulation. Rich, flowing brown glazes and textured straw ash glazes beautifully enhance the clay's raw appeal. Though original kilns ceased production around the Meiji period due to economic competition, this unique tradition saw a significant revival in the 1990s, continuing today as a cherished local craft.
