Sanshu Onigawara Kōgeihin refers to the traditional craft of producing decorative roof tiles with oni (demon) motifs in the Sanshu region (mainly Takahama, Anjō, and Hekinan in Aichi Prefecture). Made from local clay from the Mikawa area, they’re smoked in special kilns to achieve a distinctive silver-grey (“ibushi-gin”) finish. Highly decorative, this area produces a large variety of motifs, including dragons and flowers. Once strictly roof adornments, they now serve as decor, good-luck charms, and appear in interiors or alcoves. Designated as an Aichi Prefecture Traditional Craft.
