Izushi Yaki

Izushi Yaki, a distinctive porcelain from Izushi in Hyogo Prefecture, boasts a legendary origin. Its signature pure white porcelain developed in the mid-18th century after the discovery of high-quality kaolin clay. Renowned for its transparent, pure white body with smooth texture and brilliant luster, representative products like vases and tea utensils often feature intricate carved flower patterns (horikomi) on monochrome surfaces. While some pieces have subtle underglaze blue or overglaze enamels, the focus remains on the porcelain's purity. Recognized for its simple beauty and fine texture, Izushi Yaki was designated a National Traditional Craft in 1980. Today, dedicated artisans uphold its legacy of delicate craftsmanship, ensuring its distinctive aesthetic remains a cherished part of Japan's ceramic heritage.
