Yanbe Yaki

Yanbe Yaki is a traditional ceramic ware from Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture, with a history spanning approximately 200 years. Its origins trace back to a kiln established by the first generation of a Hirashimizu-yaki potter, with the third generation founding the current kiln in Yamaga. This pottery uses plant ash for its glazes, producing distinctive tea ceremony utensils, tableware, and vases. Modern Yanbe Yaki has innovatively developed glazes using local safflower and apple ash, adding a unique Yamagata touch. The kilns have continuously upheld this tradition for generations, ensuring the continuation of its rustic yet refined aesthetic. There is also Yasoji kiln in the Suzukawa district’s Yanbe area which specializes in engobe and glaze using the ash of safflower.
